Victoria & Abdul

Dame Judi Dench reunited with the role of Queen Victoria

The extraordinary true story of an unexpected friendship in the later years of Queen Victoria’s (Academy Award winner Judi Dench) remarkable rule. When Abdul Karim (Ali Fazal), a young clerk, travels from India to participate in the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, he is surprised to find favour with the Queen herself. As the Queen questions the constrictions of her long-held position, the two forge an unlikely and devoted alliance with a loyalty to one another that her household and inner circle all attempt to destroy. As the friendship deepens, the Queen begins to see a changing world through new eyes and joyfully reclaims her humanity.

A film of solid craftsmanship led by another royally magnificent performance by Judi Dench. ”It’s a combination of Oscar-worthy acting, crisp writing, beautiful cinematography and gorgeous costume designs.

“……….. resplendent with gorgeous costumes, exquisite sets and parlour-room drollery.”

It’s amazing, refreshing, heartfelt and benefits from an abundance of chemistry between its two leads.”

Tavonians Theatre Company presents ‘ The Thrill of Love’

Tavonians Theatre Company present The Thrill of Love By Amanda Whittington

‘I am guilty, I’m a little confused’, confessed Ruth Ellis following her arrest for the murder of her lover David Blakely. The Thrill of Love dramatises the true story of the last woman to be hanged in Britain, in 1955.

This gripping play takes a fresh look at the woman behind the headlines, focusing on the divorcee with a young child to care for, and who works in the kind of nightclubs where there’s more than just a drink on offer. All the girls work hard, play hard and dream of a movie-star life. When Ruth meets the wealthy, womanising David, a racing driver with whom she becomes obsessed. Fame comes – but not in the way she imagines.

Why does their relationship end in murder? Why does she plead not guilty but offer no defence? Why does she show no remorse? And who is she trying to protect? Detective Jack Gale follows her story from the beginning, hoping to piece together the motive behind why she murdered David and, more importantly, whom she might be protecting. The case of Ruth Ellis eventually led to the legal defence of diminished responsibility.
