They’ve done it! Callington Youth Project Group has purchased the building they have used for the
last year as “The Vault” youth centre, using grants from three sources:
• The Community Infrastructure Levy Fund
• Good Growth Community Levelling Up Fund*
• Callington Town Council
The purchase was completed and the keys were formally handed over last week. CYPG’s plans from
now on include some small but important modifications to the ground floor where the youth club is
primarily based. In the longer term the charity intendeds to refurbish other parts of the building to
make it more useful, and, notably, to refurbish the upper two floors, which once housed the family
of the original shop below, into four separate flats for young adults.
In the meantime, CYPG seeks additional volunteers to help it run its activities. Anyone interested
should email info@callingtonypg.org in the first instance.
Paul Carey, Chair of CYPG said, “This is a fantastic outcome and marks the end of over a year of hard
work by our trustees and supporters. Owning our own property means we can continue to provide
the services we offer without fear of closure. We are very grateful for the support provided through
Cornwall Council and their administrative teams, and to Callington Town Council for their grant.
Our twice-weekly drop-in session have proven very popular with our young people, with attendance
levels routinely between 30 and 60 young people. Our plan is to increase the number of days per
week we hold these sessions and also set up some special additional workshops covering subjects of
interest to our young people. For these we certainly need additional volunteers.
CYPG’s future is looking very bright!”
*This funding has been allocated from Cornwall Council’s Community Levelling Up Programme. The
Community Levelling Up Programme is part of the Good Growth Programme, which is delivering the
UK Shared Prosperity Fund in Cornwall and Isles of Scilly.
Notes to Editors:
Callington Youth Project Group (CYPG) was established in late 2021 after the founding trustees came
to realise there was a lack of facilities for young people in Callington, especially those that tend to
shun more organised activities such as the scouts and football. In October 2022 CYPG was
established as a Community Interest Organisation, regulated by The Charities Commission with
number 1200359. Its long term aim is to establish a permanent youth centre in Callington,
independent of any local authority, for the benefit of the young people aged 13-21 from Callington
and the surrounding area.
Future Coverage:
A symbolic “keys handover” celebration will be held on 18th July and we hope that you will be
interested in covering that at the time. For further information please contact Paul Carey on 07904
